Solving Canada Geese Conflicts on Lakefront Properties
Conflicts with Canada Geese requires identifying problem birds and selecting the right strategies to deter them. The number of birds will be determined by property owners and users.
As well,Geese nuisance problems that are experienced by Cottage Lakefront Associations that require goose management programs, have not been successful, because seasonal differences in geese behaviour, make control options difficult to plan and implement.
As a result, it is up to individual cottage owners to evaluate their own geese nuisance challenges and to adopt controls they think are most effective.
Problems That Can be expected
- Geese Poop Galore! If it gets into the lake it can cause algae blooms, deprive water of oxygen, kill fish, and contaminate water supplies.
- Poop removal by cottage owners becomes a messy, necessary cottage activity.
- Geese are territorial and can become extremely aggressive, attacking people during nesting season and when guarding their goslings.
Control Strategies
- Destruction of Nests and Eggs. This option can be 100% effective. However a permit from Wildlife Services, is mandatory, so this option is unlikely to be considered by many lakefront cottagers.
- Noise making devices. Canons, Air horns, Sirens. Distress tapes, could be effective, but proximity to other cottagers normally make their use unacceptable.
- Barriers: Can be effective. especially when adult geese are moulting and are unable to fly away to another locationThey impede access to grazing areas, block view of predators, and escape routes to water. Examples are dense plantings of tall grass, and inexpensive 12-inch-high garden fencing as shown here.
Eggs were allowed to hatch. A gaggle of goslings destined to becomenuisance geese.

Eagles Scare Nuisance Birds is a Viable Nuisance Control Strategy
- The bald eagle tops the list of natural predators of Canada Geese. The controlled use of “Chase”, our screeching eagle, is a primary aggressive scaring tactic that can be used on cottage lakefront properties, for which no permit is required from the Wildlife Services. Chase can be hand-held or easily suspended from the cantilevered arm on the derrick or from tree branches in various lake property locations.
- Screeching is unobtrusive and controlled using Bluetooth Technology from 35 to 40 feet away using a cell phone to transmit eagle cries to the weather-proof speaker attached to Chase. The speaker should be activated as much as possible when geese are nearby but especially when in the water and looking for property access.
- The derrick has been designed so that it can be easily relocated to various cottage areas on a daily basis. Geese are very smart and will quickly get used to any stationary installations.
- The following videos and images show the vatious ways that scaring strategies have been used on Cottage Lakefront pro
Chase, with Bluetooth speaker doing geese scaring on cottage deck. Also used on docks.
Great Decor!
Chase, suspended by a rubber band from tree branch on cottage lakefront. Bluetooth speaker has been activated from cell phone. This is an excellant first geese scaring strategy.
The video on the left is a typical, derrick set up complete with ballast bag, that can be used in most parts of cottage lakefront where geese might have easy access to lawns ,gardens and docks and where no other means of suspending Chase is available.
The addition of the motion activated, geese scaring sensor (described earlier) should be considered as a first line of geese defense, eapecially when no one is available to activate the Bluetooth speaker with eagle screeching cries.
In the image below, a stand alone motion activated sensor was installed near the shore of a 200 foot cottage lake frontage lot.
